My email at home is playing up. I can get incoming messages, but it wont let me send them. My internet connection is fine. I have an XP machine running Outlook Express and my broadband supplier is Talktalk ( originally Tiscali ). If I open up OE and there are no incoming messages, I get an error message. immediately....

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk', Server: 'smpt.tiscali.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

If there are incoming messages, they get downloaded and then immediately the error message appears. I can compose an email, but it wont let me send it.

Tiscali say that it's not a fault with them because I can get incoming mail and that it's an OE fault. They say I should contact Microsoft. Well, it's quite hard to get to talk to someone there. Does anybody know if the error message indicates where the problem lies? Talktalk didn't seem very interested in it.

I would be grateful for any comments.

Thank you.

Have they got some help pages about how to set up Outlook, if so, go through them and compare to your settings. Re-setting your password on both the Tiscali server and Outlook might work too. I'm presuming your at home here and you've read the link posted?

If you have cut-and-pasted the error message verbatim, then the reason for your problem is clear.

Change the server from smpt.tiscali.co.uk to the correct address smtp.tiscali.co.uk

Yes, that message was cut and pasted from the actual screen. I'll dive into the various settings when I get back home to the wayward machine. I have not been into them for months.

It was working fine until Sunday evening when it suddenly went loopy.

At work. I just looked up the incoming and outgoing port numbers etc for Tiscali. I'll check that they have not been fiddled with by some gremlin when I get home.

:wahhey::wahhey::wahhey::wahhey::wahhey: YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!
:bravo: @DaveReading:bravo: was bang on the money! I checked the incoming and outgoing mail server settings, ( 110 and 25 for Tiscali ) and they were OK, but smpt.tiscali.co.uk was indeed the server address, not smtp.tiscali.co.uk. This was corrected and it all seems to be hunky-dory. Quite how it got corrupted is a bit of a mystery.

I'm really grateful for all your advice. Thank-you.
