And it was wonderful, dawn was almost breaking, streets and roads were all but empty and I hit a new PB for top speed, albiet briefly:wacko:

This is only my third week back cycle commuting and as I work a 3 week rotational shift I was dreading this 6:00am start but in all honesty it was by far the most satisfying.

I've heard it will rain later on this week which may take the shine off my bells {and balls} but I hope all your Monday rides are as swift, smooth and pleasantly uneventful as mine.

7.10 every morning here, glad the sun has come out now, slogging it out in the dark can be a soul crusher for sure on a Monday :becool:

Leave the house at 6:20 for a 7am start, wonderfully quiet most of the way in, most of those that are about seem to be driving a bit better than usual, I sometimes even get car drivers being nice to me.

Am I the only man in the land who absolutely despises Daylight saving? I just can't stand the entire concpet of simply changing time no matter how comparitively small the adjustments.

Also, thanks for the posts guys, it gives me a bit more steel when I know I'm not the only bugger out that early.

My summer riding plan involves a once a week 100km commute into work. 5am start, nip down to Richmond Park for 8 laps. Back home to pick up bag and trundle the 12km into work.

Number of times I've thought of doing this: lots
Number of times I've actually done it: 0 (though I have done 3 laps on the way in a couple of times).

Bonus if I leave work at 5.30pm and do another 8 laps. ;)

I have done a couple of 5am starts though; 75km to a 9am start of a 100km Audax (got there at 8am!) then 75km home again (7pm, 14 hour 250km with several hours of rest), and a 320km ride up North (train back the next day).

More often than not I'm out of the door at about 8.30am and avoiding the school runs.

It's not DST that increases accidents it's the change back. If we didn't move our clocks forward in the first place it would still be as dark in October and the accidents would still happen, they just wouldn't be concentrated over a smaller time period. I actually think the change back to GMT improves saftey. It's an obvious reminder to parents (and I s'pose to cyclists) that the day will become darker, literally overnight. If there was no sudden clock shift the days would gradually get shorter. e.g. the way dusk creeps up on you. Hence the large numbers of cyclists/motorists driving around at the moment in semi-darkness without lights turned on.
