Any suggestions or recommendations?

Oh and is it a really bad idea to set it up in my garage given that the garage has an asbestos roof?

What do you want to achieve? Best to do interval training than just merrily spinning away.

No danger from your asbestos roof, unless it's broken (and then probably not).

I always go with the Tacx range, good turbos and value for money.

Depends what your budget is though as turbos can be bought from around £70 - £1k.

I've got an old fan assissted one (no longer made by Tacx)...the faster you pedal, the more resistance. Therefore, you've got to use your gears to get a decent workout. I've also bought the Tacx Satori although not used in anger yet. Beauty of this is it folds up so I can take it to events for warming up, etc.

I'm thinking of getting the Forteus Multiplayer but still undecided on that yet.

Have a look at the Tacx range:

I have just bought a Minoura Mag 500 http://www.minoura.jp/mag500l-e.htm that comes with a remote shifter device which "is installed on your handlebar and it allows you to select the resistance level from 7 different ranges." as well as using your own gears. It is very easy to set up, folds neatly for storing and so far I'm very pleased with it.
