for the month is £11.06. Which is less than a third of what it's been for the last year.

1. I stalled on renewal of the contract, and said that I would shop around. I said that I was content with the phone I've got.
2. At the last minute I asked for a code to allow my number to be transferred to Tesco
3. The day the contract expired I was offered 200 minute of calls, 500 text messages and 500mB of downloads for eight quid a month.

It would be invidious to name the company - I'm told that they're all pretty much the same.

Just saying...........

Am going through the same process with Orange right now. Have just requested a pack code and am waiting for a call back.

Crazy that I've paid what I've paid (for Mrs Jeez Iphone) for so long. Just one of those "must get round to it" jobs

Did the same and got a cracking deal.
Was with Vodafone and swapped to Virgin for a quarter of the price per month. Crap loads of texts, data, calls etc

Thanks for that encouragement Simon. Been on a legacy tariff with fruit coloured provider for too long. Like you i'm happy to use current phone (or scrounge another from the kid's collection). Don't need data but cross network minutes and free texts would be great.

Tesco or GiffGaff seem to be good negotiating starts.

Certainly pays to shop around ... at every renewal /update opportunity.
I had what I considered to be already an excellent deal (on my own supplied handset) but by the time I'd played off all the different networks against each other - and then played one saleman against another from the selected provider, I got a brand new Wildfire S for just £5 month extra.

I was with Virgin on a sim only monthly renewal for around £12 and got a call from Virgin saying they could increase the mins and texts AND reduce the bill to a tenner. I said I would think about it and said
''email me the details''
He said it was just a telephone offer and I said oh well I'll think about it then.

Final offer............£5.50 per month 300 mins of calls and 600 texts. (far more than I ever use)The only catch is that it is a ''contract'' for a year rather than renewed monthly.

Result !^_^

I've been with the same company for around 8 years now. I don't get free phones from them, if I want a phone I buy it. As a consequence I'm a valued customer and pay £10 a month for 300 mins, 300 texts and unlimited* internet.

Having been an early adopter of mobile technology I would rate the companies accordingly: Vodafone, the benchmark basically, this is the minimum service you should expect; Orange - great service but rigid plans and relatively expensive; T-Mobile - a very good service and a willingness to help, signal etc better since they formed Everywhere with Orange; O2 - don't touch with someone else's.

* I will suffer a service degradation after 1gb but won't actually be stopped from using the internet.

I've found that with the services offered by Tesco, ASDA et al are pretty poor.
They piggy back off the main networks - Asda is Vodafone for example - and don't get the same priority as genuine Vodafone users. I was forever getting dropped calls, unsent SMS and dodgy data connection.
Stick with a proper network.

These retention deals and new customer deals really annoy me, I hate bartering and negotiating - I just want to pay what something is worth and not feel ripped off. Sky are the same, you can periodically phone them up and try to cancel and theyll usually offer you something like 6 months half price to think about it. Theyve also got some dumb thing that if you cancel you cant sign back up for a year to get the benefits new customers do, but its tied to the person not the address so you get people alternating 12 months each with their partner to ensure they get the latest deals or something like that.

Good job on getting a nice price though

Poor network signal seems to affect battery life too especially on smartphones, like straining to keep connected.

With my dolfin plan from orinj, i get 100MB data free - this is internet use, right? How do I know how much data I have used if I connect to the internet? Supposing I went to BBC's homepage - then went to Sports section. How much data is that used up? I've never used the internet on my phone!

Possibly the flip between 3G and GSM networks? Telling the phone to use only GSM will lengthen your battery life, but don't bother trying to use data on it, will be like dialup
