I'm fortunate to live and work in Northern Germany where cycling is looked on very favourably and the infrastructure is really good. However the one problem I do encounter is with the trains, where despite a large and mostly empty carriage on my regional commuter train, I get charged €5 over and above my normal fare each day for the privilege of using my single speed to get to work. So I've finally relented and decided to join the legions of folders who get to ride the trains for free.

Bromptons are out of my league price wise and and after eyeing up loads of makes on the morning commute I'd decided a Dahon or Tern would maybe be a wise investment if ever a good one turned up on eBay Kleinanzeigen (Ebay small ads.)

However a local bike chain recently had an offer going on the base model Dahon Vybe C7A, rather than the usual €460 it was €330, a pretty good saving. For that money your not going to get the best folder in the world, but what you do get is a rather good bike for the cash. As the name suggests it's a seven speed derailleur set with an own brand shifter rather like the old grip shift. As it's a Dahon it folds really quickly and efficiently, whilst not as small as a Brompton the resultant fold is still more than small enough.

The frame is an aluminium Dahon one with their really good hinge mechanism, it's the rest of the components where the savings have been made. Things like a cup and cone BB rather than a sealed cartridge, cheap unbranded cantilevers and Dahons own brand rear mech. However these can all be upgraded over time if needed to create a really good bike. You also get a rear rack and full mudgaurds in with the deal, so for the money I was really quite pleased.

All in all it's been fun last week commuting on it and the only thing I've done is swap the saddle for my preferred Charge spoon saddle. The area where I live is really flat so I've no real need for the gears but they function well enough and I need to remind myself it'snot meant to be a speed machine as I'm spinning frantically in seventh trying to ring a few more KPH out of it! Anyway here's a quick photo of the handsome beast.

Lovely. I have a Decathlon Hoptown which is a rebadged Dahon and looks very similar to this model. Great bike for the monet and nice to ride.

Enjoy your new ride!

Not suitable for everyone but I do like the spoon myself, I've got one on all three of my bikes now. The saddle the Dahon came with was not unlike the one in the picture above, however it was black with a lurid turquoise stripe, so that drove the change as much as the comfort!

The Bfold does look remarkably similar and while there are many re-badged Dahon's out there, this one has a slightly different frame to mine, for instance the seat stays are welded to the front of the seat tube, where mine are welded to the back. Be intrigued to see one in the metal.

Two weeks of owning mine has been good though, the drivetrains a little rattly despite lots of fettling, but that aside it,s a lovely little bike. Comparing it to a colleagues more expensive Dahon you can see this one is built down to a price, not only cheaper components, but things like the rack is a lot weedier than my friends. I use a rucksack for my commute though so that's no real concern. I was also pleased to see schwalbe do winter studs in 20" so I can keep riding right through the winter and I'm on the lookout for a dynohub for the front. For the moment though I'm enjoying the warm weather we've been having here in northern Germany.

The singlespeed one is about £140 IIRC. The 6 speed (which doesn't seem to be on sale any more) was about £180 - I got mine second hand from @User of this parish. That one up there ^^ is £250 from Decathlon - 7 speed with a rack.

Thought I might update this thread after 6 months of communting on the Dahon. It's proved a nice little bike and pretty reliable on my daily commute however there have been a few issues. The first one which I failed to appreciate was the hinge itself, whist it works really well the left hand side of it is square and as such is forever catching my trousers and wearing rain trousers is a nightmare. Looking around other more expensive folders all the hinges are beefier and with a rounded profile on the top. Somthing I'd failed to appreciate when looking for a folder.

Another manifestation of the cheap price has been the original tyres, they were as thin as paper and rode like it too. After a spate of punctures I swopped them out for a set of Shwalbe marathons, much better to ride and no punctures.

The pedals were also pretty dire plastic folding jobs and the right one collapsed after 2 months, spitting it's bearings everywhere. I'm temporarily using the pedals from my other bike until I can find some decent quality folding pedals.

You can certainly see why David Hons son complained about the bikes getting cheaper and nastier when you look at this bike compared to the more expensive bikes in the range, however it serves a purpose and still serves it well. Maybe one day if I come across a good Tern or Dahon on Kleinanziegan then I might be tempted to upgrade but for the moment I'll keep commuting on this one.
