Bottom bracket I'd say, go to the other side of the cycle see if it does the same, if yes then tighten that side.

It's either the BB loose, or the crank loose on the bottom bracket.
It the other crank wobbles the same way, it's the BB.
If it's just that crank, then the crank is loose, and if you've ridden it as loose as that, then you've almost certainly wrecked it

Get thee to a bike shoppee. It's the bottom bracket. Ask them to fit a shimano UN55 (or a UN26 if you are a cheapwad) and then forget about it almost for ever. UN55 should cost around £15-20 plus fitting.

UN54 is being phased out. I struggled to get one recently and I did read somewhere that although the 55 is often listed as for road bikes it is the same thing but has 'better' metal cups rather than the plastic ones of the 54?

UN54 have indeed been hard to get hold of lately. Very glad Shimano have taken on board the ill-feeling about the old plastic cup and put a metal in on the replacement. And thanks for the "heads-up" on this !

I did manage to get a UN54 so can't confirm the UN55 does have metal cups but as I was replacing a BB that was last fitted to my neglected MTB at least 10 years ago and possibly as long as 15 years ago I wasn't concerned and like I said, they really are almost fit and forget.
