I came off my bike this morning because of some black ice on a corner. This is a photo of my helmet afterwards. It's a hard BMX helmet, the polystyrene lining is also split. I felt winded but apart from that I was unhurt. It's saved me from a trip to hospital and probably a fractured skull.

That is the sort of thing that gives the lie to all the posts I see on other forums saying" helmets don;t work"

One crash like that and you could be dependant on nurses for the rest of your life

Glad you are OK - helmets are cheap compared to the alternative

Those posts really annoy me

I don't get involved in the discussions tbh. The divide is too wide and opposing viewpoints are too deeply entrenched.

A bit like blue & red politics.

PS: 'for', here.

Wow ! Glad you came away unscathed and your helmet did its job 👍

**Split line had a hole in it looks like whatever it was (Stud for a Peak to clip onto ? / rivet to hold internals in ?). Either way that may have been a start / weak spot for the split. It’s not happened and run smack bang through the middle of the ‘hole’ by pure chance imo….

Either way it did enough. And would have been some impact on a naked skull for sure 😳

Do bear in mind the construction of this one is more akin to a motorcycle helmet, so it doesnt give lie to that at all.

Glad to hear you're OK Chris. As my Dad says, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

Black ice is evil and at this time of year, too many occrances.
In my case, it gave me a fractured pelvis, alas my landing was bad and I couldn't walk away.

Glad you are ok.

Sorry to hear that - hope you are OK now or getting that way

I seem to manage to fall off without the help of ice and snow
so I have been leaving the bike in the shed during the recent weather

the tyre I use are no help - designed for roads with a pattern designed to look good rather than add grip - but also reduces resistance
but to sideway as well as forward movement!!!
