Not wanting me to have all the fun to myself my wife got herself a bike. Carrera Subway womens version. Nice it is too.

Mudguards are cheap ones and could be replaced soon.

No point replacing the guards if they do the job right.

Well, they'll probably keep your wife dry, but they won't protect the drive train, or anyone following her. If you go riding together in wet roads, you'll want to keep ahead of her.
