My pride and joy is a specialised Roubaix that I have had for 10 months. I abused it last winter but it still saw me through the dark wet rides in my training for the London 100.

It has earned more respect so I have convinced my wife that I should get a bike for the winter and give the Roubaix a few months off. My budget will be £3-400. A triple would be ideal as I plan to do shorter hillier rides through the winter but that may be asking a lot in this price range.

Any thoughts?

For me, a winter bike needs to be one that can shrug off wet, salty or icy weather. So it would have clearances for fatter, studded tyres, and mudguards. It would probably have hub gears or no gears at all. Cables would not run under the bottom bracket (that's a great place for them to get corroded or frozen. In fact, it might look a lot like a cyclo cross bike.

Whether there's one off the shelf that does all this at a price you'll like, I couldn't say. You could always build your own...

Btwin Triban 3 - original red one if you can or the white 3A

If the OP wants a triple, he likely lives somewhere hilly (as he says) and thus SS is probably not the most appropriate  Will get fit quick, thighs of steel and probably shed a few lbs though!

Hybrid for the winter months. Great for training across varied terrain, limitless tyre combinations, and you will absolutely fly come spring time on the Roubaix.
A specialized sirrus (base model) is circa £350 ???

I'm so annoyed with myself that I sold my specialized when I bought my bianchi. If I could win the lottery I think a nice cyclocross would be the way I'd go. Failing that just something cheap.

Thinking about getting a Boardman Hybrid. Under £390 with British Cycling discount from Halfords.

Has anyone got one?

I would take a look at decanthlon hybrids as well, just in case you can get one that runs discs and mudguards. How about a ridgeback or dawes, maybe heavier but should have better provision for mudguards etc

I have a Boardman hybrid comp that I bought from a cool dude on here..... It does have mudguards fitted. I like it but only have my trek 7100fx to compare it to. It's a big improvement on that

Havent got one, but they sure look good for the money phil

I bought a jamis dakota 29er for the winter bike to use the offroad tracks and trials. I live about 15miles from you phil so i know the roads you ride on, so go for the boardman hybrid and dont look back.

either use the specialised Roubaix as your winter bike or go 2nd hand route , and get yourself a proper steel bike with the same spec you want
