Nasty incident - Cardiff

Just got off the phone with the cops...

Was cycling today at around 5.30pm along Ninian Road in Cardiff down towards the junction with Wellfield Road when was overtaken VERY close by a silver Ford Escort (LJ02 LGF) - about a foot clearance to my elbow.

I made the "pushing out" gesture 2-3 times. The car immediately stopped about ten yards in front of me in the middle of the road (slightly over the white line), and the driver jumped out, shouting at me: "what's your problem?".

My momentum took me past him, and I shouted at him to leave cyclists room when overtaking. He then got back in his car and drove after me at speed. He wound his window down and continued to shout at me, before swerving his car towards me twice, as we neared the community centre on the left near the junction. I shouted at him to get his f***ing car away from me, at which point he revved the engine fiercely, accelerated, and swerved at me one more time, coming even closer - I hopped up onto the pavement to get out of the way, or I suspect he may have hit me.

We had now reached the back of a queue of traffic at the lights at the junction. He exited the car again, and began shouting "f***ing come on then!!", and other choice epithets. By this time I was pretty shaken, and wanted to put some distance between me and him. Should perhaps have phoned 999 there and then, but instead went round the corner to the left up Pen y Lan hill.

Will see what happens - obviously probably won't be a great deal, but have had a decent result with Cardiff coppers re an incident a couple of years ago, so we'll see...

It will at least go as a marker on his record. The guy that tried to run my off the road got a call from the cops, but it was your word vs his, but he got another report on him - the vehicle was already down for other incidents I was told.

Blimey! What a complete K**bhead! You were a lot braver than I'd have been in that situation. Hope the police catch up with this muppet. Be really interested to know outcome - keep us all posted. Hope the experience hasn't put you off your commute.

Echoed on all counts.

Thanks all. No, I'm not put off in the slightest - been cycling here for 6 years, and only had a couple of unpleasant experiences in all that time. Cardiff's a pretty good city to cycle in, as far as I'm concerned.

The previous incident I mentioned was similar, though not as blatant (or as bizarrely over-the-top - could have maybe understood this guy's reaction a bit more if I'd flicked him the Vs or something...). In that case, a well-disposed cycling copper had words with the scrote responsible, who was, as they say "known to the police" for such activities...

But can "markers" add up to anything else? In other words, if someone keeps on doing this sort of thing, can s/he eventually be charged with anything?

And once again I realise … they live among us. WHY???????? This childish, ignorant behaviour really does wind me up

I see more of this sort of person than decent people. I despaired for society long ago and still do.

afaik and I stand to be corrected, they could get a section 59 which with continual reports can lead to disqualification/ vehicle being confiscated and crushed.

The police just paid a visit - seems the national police database has that reg plate down as belonging to a red Escort van in Stornaway... so the dude in the silver car is another driver on the roads with fake number plates, no insurance and probably no license.

Nice quick response from the cops: crap result, but what can you do? Nice to know idiots like that guy are on our streets and able to threaten, intimidate and - maybe next time - hit-and-run with total impunity.

Sorry to hear that there's no satisfaction for you, but then hopefully they will put it on the ANPR system and catch him at some stage in the future.

This is something that the anti-camera minority haven't even thought about - that of those videos up on youtube, quite a large proportion are not just displaying one incident of bad driving. They often also haven't paid tax or insurance, or are registered to fake addresses and owners.

Thanks for the update - fair do's to the police. Glad to read that they took it the matter seriously - even if it was not the outcome you were hoping for. The important thing is that you took the time and trouble to report the matter. At least it raises awareness of this type of unsavoury incident with the constabulary. Also really glad to read that the incident has not put you off your commute. All the best and I hope you never have to post anything like the above again!! Happy (and safe) cycling.
