This is my first post on this forum and I'm hoping for some good advice as I'm no expert and i could do with some help on picking a new bike.

I have always enjoyed mountain biking and i do it a few times a month. I don't take it very seriously and so i am currently using an old bike which is clearly outdated by about 5/6 years. Im looking to upgrade and "take it to the next level". I really want to start mountain biking as a serious hobby but i think my current bike is holding me back. I currently cycle on rugged trails and routes when mountain biking, and i can feel my current bike struggling. I also use my bike on basic roads and paths as i cycle to my local town every now and then. My new bike will need to handle both areas (the road cycling isn't as much as a priority).

Im 16, 6'5ft (196cm) and i have been told that i will need a 22inch+ frame. This frame size and upwards seems a rarity in comparison to smaller frame sizes and so I'm struggling to find a new bike.

I have a budget of £450 although if i really had to, i could push to £500.

If anyone has any ideas please respond, Thanks!

On the plus side, at this time of year and going forwards, often the "rarer" sizes from 2014 start to become heavily discounted as few people are buying them and the shops need to make room for 2015 stock.

It would be useful to know EXACTLY what bike you're currently using before people make recommendations about what or whether to replace it with.

Hi @Jackspace & :welcome: from the Peoples Republic of Mancunia.

I am not very well up on Mtb these days (used to do a bit), so I will try keep it short & sweet.

At 6ft 5" for your age especially, you know that you are very tall.
With this in mind I suggest a 29er if you can find a decent one in budget.

I think this is most likely to provide you with the proper fit.

An XL frame required as you know.
