I have a 26 mile rural round trip commute. I ride a Surly Crosscheck and have done 8,000 miles in 2 years. I have the following tryes fo different conditions ...

Continental Ultra Gatorkins - I use these in the dry(ish) summer months, they are the lightest of my tryes and give me the quickest commute time.
Schwalbe Marathon Plus - Great tyres which I use in late Autumn and early Spring. I don't want unplanned defaltions in the dark, cold, wet weather.
Schwalbe Marathon Winters - Fantastic tyres for icy and snowy conditions, I used these every day from Chritsmas to Easter.

I am worried about the Gatorskins as I have several cuts in the tyres from grit and glass shards, some of these cuts are an inch or more long and I have had grit penetrate the tyre and liberate the air in wet weather.

What tyres should I get to replace the Gatorskins? I want lightweight, some puncture resistance and easy rolling resistance.

Thanks

How about the standard Marathons and not the +? I use Schwalbe tyres on both bikes now and am very happy with them.(M+ and Durano+)

I was getting 1 or 2 punctures a week earlier in the year then in one 4 mile trip down a cyclepath got 7 in the front and 2 in the back ( hawthorne clippings ! ) So I decided to go for specialized nimbus armadillos, ah, bliss. Not one puncture in 6 months (app. 2000 miles ) Highly recommended

I had a Nimbus Amadillo on the back of my Sirrus for a while iirc I got one p'ture in 6000 miles; they are a great tyre for p resistance, good rolling too and extremely hard wearing too. I found it a little too hard wearinging however and probably ran it too long and in its latter life I found it a little skittish in the wet. Out of choice however I joined a club and put narrower tyres on the bike (23mm front/25mm rear) conti 4 seasons, p'ture wise they are almost as robust as the Amadillo but grip and roll better but then again they are more expensive and not as long living aswell (I got about 3500miles out of the rear and 4250 out of the replacement which was on the front for its first 1400mls) .

Levad, you don't mention what sizes you're using in the various tyres, I have a Xcheck as well and run similar to you without the Summer option, but am considering as it's no longer going to be the main commuter. I've got:-

M+ in 700x35
M Winter in 700x35

Was looking at a 28 or 32 and something along the lines of the Marathon supreme or the Panaracer Ribmo. Partly because I have a set of the Ribmo that I haven't used yet, the M+ just don't seem to wear out.

Bontrager Hardcase Racelights?

Agree. Replaced my Contis with these and after a couple or hundred miles they appear far more durable. No Loss in speed either.

They're a very good price too.

Thanks everyone. The wheels are 700c and the tyres are as follows:

Contis - 25
M+ - 28
Winters - 35

I had a £5 voucher from Wiggle and they have 12% off this weekend so I have plumped for some Continental GP 4Seasons (700x25). I couldn;t see the Bontrager tyres on Wiggle but will bear them in mind for next time!

I've had both gators and 4 seasons and the latter are by far the better tyre, still cut up a bit easy though and are much better in the wet than the gators.Think you'll be happy with them.

One to bear in mind if you don't mind running 32's are the Schwalbe Marathon Supremes (don't think they go below 32?). Been running them for ~3k without incident - have picked some shocking bits of flint/glass in them. They also roll a lot better the the +'s.

I have to admit swallowing a bit at the price though I'm glad I got them.
