I suppose everyones got their preferences, but being on Virgin Media, i installed the DLink DIR-615 after having connection problems with the older DIR-524 router.
DIR-615, 300mbps
DIR-524, 54mbps...no wonder my son was struggling with online gaming.

Since i fitted the DIR-615 about 3 months ago...no problems whatsoever. Downloading speed is very good, no problems with my sons online gaming, no problems with wireless connections anywhere in the house.

How old's your cable modem?

Any proof that the problem is the router rather than external interference ?
Did you lose internet connection or just wireless ?
Have you tried switching it to wireless g only ?
Define cheap ?

How old's your cable modem?

Old...we had a 'friend of a friend' who works for Virgin come to look when we were getting problems and Virgin had already sent a new router...he took one look at the modem and said 'its an very old one, you should get one of the new modem/routers'
TBF, the new router (DLink 615) sorted it. He tested the modem and it was showing a good data throughput (something like that anyway)
Perhaps similar to Users problem, we found in our living room, we frequently lost or had poor connection with the old router. Move to the kitchen...no problem.

Download netstumbler and check to see which channels are in use and try those that are unused/less busy first and change the router to those channels.
Mind you if it's a problem with neighbours using crumby analogue wireless junk such as baby monitors then that's going to take out large chunks of bandwidth.

Have you tried using a different router?

Check the ADSL filter - they can sometimes be the cause of intermittent quality of service issues.

Use a network cable and connect it directly to the router to rule-out the wireless functionality.

Change channels is good advice too, especially if there are a number of routers nearby.

Speak to your telephone company / ADSL provider and ask them to do a line check.

What wireless protocol are you using (on the router): 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11b/g, 802.11g, 802.11n (150Mbps)

If you're using 802.11n - try changing it to 802.11b/g as your line may not support 150Mbps yet.

Cheers,
Shaun
