Since you said that you do not understand terminology, what do you really mean by "I want to network them together"
What do you exactly want to do?

Ignore the existence of crossover cables, if your plugging both into the same router they will see each other. If one is connected by a cable into a router and the other is connected to a wireless network facilitated by that router the machines will see each other.

Assuming you've for sharing enabled on both machines...

The wireless link should allow you to access the hard drive in the desktop, as long as you set the sharing settings on the desktop to share it on the network. Using a cable is not required, and trying to connect wired aand wirelessly to the same network at the same time is likely to cause confusion.

It is now a matter of changing settings in your computer for sharing.

Make sure both have 'network discovery' on which it probably is anyway. Then, open the network and yiu should see the other computer on each.

Rather than sharing the harddrive I would create a new folder on each computer which is only used for transferring files. Then, when transferred move it out and put where you want. If there's some particular files yiu wish to share, limit it to those.

And it's case sensitive .... So "network" isn't the same as "NETWORK"
