New Bike recommendation

Hello all - my first post.

I am looking for recommendations for a hybrid / commuting bike.

I currently have two mountainbikes and two race bikes but none seem to match what I am looking for. My ride home from work is about 14 miles all uphill! The mountainbikes seem a bit cumbersome and heavy and the race bikes too extreme. Therefore I am thinking about investing in a bike which is VERY ligh and comfortable.

Weight is more important than anything else.

I am happy to spend around 1,000.

Thoughts?

Look at the top of the range Sirrus hybrid like a road bike but straight handlebars.

Most manufacturers do something with full guard clearances, pannier rack stays and for the hill (and presumably extra weight of carrying clothes etc) stick a compact/triple on.

I ride a Ribble winter/audax with 105 triple and a rack. Works a dream. And it's ideal for taking on a bit of a longer spin post work if I fancy.

That sort of cash will get you a Boardman Hybrid Pro , the upright side of really sporty, and very light at 21lb It comes with a 50/36 compact over a 11-32 cassette. Your commute home sounds fun, I thought mine was 'orrible at 6 miles uphill!

You'd be better off with a triple than a compact double chain set for commuting up hill, unless to are a racing pro...

Get an M6L Brompton, that'll do the trick.

Direct Line bought me a Sirrus Comp, which has just had its first few outings. A fine commuter bike and one which is great on hills.

Shame I'm sh1t at them.

I would recommend a top end Specialized Sirrus or one of the Boardman bikes. Fella at work just bought one on the C2W scheme.

You really are spoilt for choice with that sort of money. I'd get down to an LBS that does a few brands and tell 'em what you're after and undersell your budget by, say, £200 (£800 is still an impressive amount for a hybrid). Have a test ride of a few, then if you want, go for the next model up or add a few extras such as nice lights, waterproofs etc.
