Hello everyone,

My current bike that I use to cycle to work, a giant rock mtb, is having problems with it's freewheel spinning on both directions. Plus the chain and chainset are also in need of replacement and to be honest it is not the greatest of the bikes. So I was thinking instead of spending more money on it, I might as well buy a "new" second hand bike. I use it every day to cycle to work and around the city (Cambridge, UK) and since it is quite flat I never bothered to replace the gears after they fail a couple of years ago so I have been using single speed.
Plus I am going to get a new job in a few months which will require me to cycle 9 miles each way.

With that in mind and the fact that my budget is limited, probably around £200 maximum, what is my best option? I was thinking in going for s single speed, but I am worried that if I then have to cycle a longer distance in a few months I might have to buy a new bike again. But I definitely want something with flat bars. Also I could probably repair an old bike, although have no experience in fitting bottom brackets or forks so not sure I can just start with a frame.

I had a Specialized Sirrus that I commuted on for a couple years before getting a road bike and found it fantastic (was a 20 mile round trip)...just had a quick look on ebay and you'd probably get one secondhand within that price range. Also, replaced the BB of my road bike recently and was quite straight forward...just make sure you get the right one and have the correct tools (I had to but twice and then had to borrow the tools I needed!!!)
Hope you get on ok...
