I've only gone and done it - placed an order for matching (almost) his 'n hers new hybrid bikes - £1,000 on the credit card but £450 saved. A Scott Sub 40 for the good lady wife and a Scott Sub 10 for myself.

The idea is to retire my road bike from the work commute and used the Scott instead, that should be able to better cope with the huge potholes and mud I face daily. I've also gone for disc brakes and the Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub gears, hoping they will cope better with all year round weather - and hoping I don't get a rear wheel puncture!

The road bike will be cleaned up for weekend use, though I'll probably stick to the hybrid when Mrs O. tags along.

Does anyone have these bikes? If so what is your experience of them?

Got my bike - it's still in its box though, so I 'm looking forward to opening up at the weekend.

Bad news on the wife's bike though - it's out of stock and as it was a 2011 clearance model there's no chance of getting another. However, as an a apology for this and because it took so long to inform me, I've been allowed to select the 2012 model at the same discounted price. Well done Evans! I think the 2012 colour is nicer too - the only bad news is, it's another long wait until this one can be delivered...

Put the pedals and been for a spin. First impressions - disappointed with the lack of speed compared to my road bike and it certainly seemed quite a bit more effort... but then I noticed how smooth the ride was, how it was just soaking up the bumps and dips without rattling my teeth or the bike.

... and then there's the brakes- hell! Never experienced anything like that! Disc brakes are the way to go.

Maiden commute on the Scott today - sort of forced as the wire bead on the rear tyre of my road bike came away from the rubber yesterday, allowing the tube to create a large bulge where the tyre came away from the rim. Very gentle ride 12.5 mile ride home! New tyre on order.

The Scott has beautifully smooth gear changes from its Alfine hub - plenty of low down gearing but perhaps its top gear could be higher.

I seemed to be doing a lot more thigh work than usual. The upright ride was a lot better for my back though but I'm not sure I've got the saddle height quite right yet. Also after only 3 months clipless, it seemed weird to go back to flats - will need an upgrade there! Oh and mudguards and a rack, maybe some bar ends....

It seemed an awful lot slower today (gone from a 23 to a 37 tyre, so what do I expect?) but I enjoyed a lesser effect from the pot-holes. Also my ride home was only 2 minutes slower than my so far best time on my road bike, over a distance of 12.5 miles - so maybe it isn't really so slow as it seems. ^_^

Interesting how we perceive speed and just as well we have clocks/'puters etc to tell us that we aren't that slow !

Hope you enjoy the greater comfort - and if you want to go faster, some thinner/lighter tyres might make a bit of difference.

Otherwise - just MAN UP !
