New Commuter Hub in Glasgow

Hi Folks

We are opening a new commuter cycling hub in Glasgow with good quality bike parking with maintenance, servicing etc. while you are at work, showers, laundry, a great cafe that does packed lunches, all on a swipecard system so you can get in and out when you like.

To get an idea of what we will look like, go to www.cycle2city.com.au for a look - we will be aiming for the same standard for us all in this poor weather!

What do you think?

I am quite well served at work with secure bike parking and showers, but generally interested in this. There is a guy I chat to on the Glasgow to Edinburgh train who would cycle if he had a place to shower in Glasgow. There is a market here and it is possibly the people not currently cycling simply because they lack the facilities. Like all things, cost will be a major factor in this. Good luck

Hey zizou,

we are working with Sustrans to work out where the majority of cyclers come in and which routes are most often used - but in the main it will be city based.

i cycle 15 miles a day - and whilst i have showers at work, i don't like leaving my bike in the rain - also, I wanted somewhere where people like me would hang out.

the plan is to be a little more relaxed, a bit like Mellow Johnny's (www.mellowjohnnys.com) who we also have been talking to, and just start to make commuting by bike and being more active a "normal" thing ......

Thanks guys - we're going for the big push over the winter and hope to be ready for Summer '10 - additional stuff will be in-store product launches (hopefully for the likes of endura, garmin, gore etc.) and we will be arranging some sportives, mini tours, and some guest speakers (my personal choices would be Obree and Millar, but who knows?!)

price is going to be a difficult issue - but we are hoping that discussions with the bigger companies progress well and they will get season tickets for staff at a reduced price - say for people on the cycle to work scheme etc.

so f**king excited man!

I am whole-heartedly behind you, and if I commuted there I'd do it.

My only reservation, and it is nothing against your idea, is that with very few good quality cycling paths away from traffic, it will be a while before a large client base is built up, due to people not cycling because of not wanting to ride on the 'dangerous streets'.

hey comedy pilot

totally agree - that's why i think working with Sustrans and Strathclyde Passenger Transport will be important - they can only put in more routes as more people commute, and more people will commute if they see it as a viable option - totally chicken and egg innit!

i think (maybe) that if we can convince the bigger companies to take season tickets for staff then we might stand a chance of upping the pressure on getting lanes markes - the city council could be a good customer . . .
