New features - coming soon ...

The forum software will be upgraded in the coming months bringing some changes and new features including:
  • Responsive design - the layout will adapt to the device you're using. No need to select different styles for mobiles, tablets, PCs and laptops - elements of the page will automatically be consolidated or removed to accomodate the device you're using, giving just the essentials on the most narrow views (such as a mobile in portrait mode) to the kitchen sink on PCs and laptops.

  • Forum watch - is making a return. You'll be able to watch a forum for new threads / posts and get alerts and / or emails when new threads are created. They'll work like thread watching and you'll only get one alert until you visit the forum and view it.

  • New editor - the current post editor is being replaced with a new one based on Redactor. It looks and works a bit differently to TinyMCE but is lighter (code wise) and more reactive, removes formatting when posting content into it, auto-saves drafts of your posts (and retains them in the database for a while in case you have connection / device problems), and for some browsers also offers drag-and-drop uploading.

  • Alternative smiley insertion - clicking the smiley icon will drop them out from the bottom of the editor where they'll stay - allowing you to easily add multiple smilies as you compose your post.

  • Pasting images - if you use Chrome or Firefox and have an image in your clipboard, you can simply paste it into the editor. It will automatically be uploaded as an attachment if possible. If the upload is successful, this works exactly like uploading an image and then clicking the "full image" button.

  • "Someone else has posted" notification - tied to the auto-saving, you'll be notified if anyone else replies as you're composing your post, allowing you to read them before you hit reply and without refreshing the page.

  • Personal conversations - you can now see all participants in a conversation without having to open it, you can tag conversations with stars to visually bookmark them, you can bulk manage them over multiple pages - star/unstar, mark as read/unread, or leave the conversation.

  • Thread title editing - for a short while after creating a thread you'll be able to edit the title.

  • New "Notable Members" page - the current members page will be replaced with a new set of notable member tabs; Most messages, Most likes, Most points, Staff Members. (You'll still be able to search for members by name in the sidebar, as you can now).
I'll post a firmer announcement nearer the time of the upgrade, but wanted to give you all a heads-up of what's coming.

Cheers,
Shaun
