I have always enjoyed riding my MTB around the woods and gravel tracks etc. However in the last few years I got into doing road riding. I have done the London to Brighton bike ride a couple of times (on a MTB with chunky tyres!) and find it much more enjoyable than riding round the woods etc.

Last weekend some friends and I went to the New Forest to do some road riding and that's when I finally realised things have got to change! My friends were all riding road bikes or hybrids and I was there on my (what I thought was light) MTB with road tyres fitted! We ended up doing about 40 miles on Sunday and although I managed to keep up it was pretty difficult!

So I have made the decision that it's time for me to get a road bike. I went and rode a Specialized Allez 24 last night which seemed nice to ride, although I don't really have anything to compare it with. Is this a good starter bike or is there something else I should consider? I don't really want to spend more than about £600ish on the bike.

Cheers

The spec on these ain't bad. There's a few things you might change over time. Alternatively there's the Scott range but might push the budget a little.

Whatever you get I recommend the LBS as its a real pain to send back your new bike when something goes wrong under warranty. Plus you get, or should do, a free service after about three months when everything has settled in.

I will definitely be using my LBS. Makes it so much simpler if I have a problem with the bike
