Hi all,

I'm looking at a new bike around £500, and I've settled on a hybrid to hopefully go faster than my current old MB but be able to go over tracks, have a rack fitted and generally be reasonably practical as an everyday mode of transport.

I'm fairly close to ordering a Trek 7.3 FX WSD, but was wondering if anyone had any further recommendations before I go ahead and order, please?

I was also seriously considering the Merida Crossway 100, but I think the front suspension will add unnecessary weight, and I ideally want a frame with women's dimensions but a step-over top tube (for front child seat fitting and generally practicality).

Thanks in advance

Thanks Dave, having the patience of a gnat I've spent some time going through reviews (nearly all positive), and have gone ahead and asked the shop to order me one to try. Now to do some work and stop thinking about shiny new bikes!

I also have a 7.3 and it is a good bike. I have had it for about 18 months. I recently rode the Dunwich Dynamo on it. I have a rack fitted and mudguards. I originally found the Bontrager saddle absolute purgatory so that went into my junk box (it now resides on my road bike), and I have changed the handlebars for ones with a bit of rise in them. If you wish to use bar ends make sure you get the adaptors to go under the clamp or you will be unable because the handlebar ends are a peculiar shape where the cushioning is set into the bars. I also changed the stock 700x32 tyres for 700x28 tyres when they wore out. Oh yes, and I was born in Coventry. I hope you enjoy your bike.

Thanks, that's useful info. I'm not convinced by the saddle but will give it a decent go before I spend more hard-earned cash.

Saddles are very subjective things. What doesn't suit one person may be loved by another so don't be put off by my comment. It doesn't help that I have a big backside!

I have the SSR WSD saddle (in fact I have two), very comfy for my sizeable behind

I had a Trek 7.2 in the past, very good bike

Have a look at the Whyte range, probably over budget but may find something on sale

Go on, tilt your head!
My wife is interested in getting a betterer bike and we also tried out the Trek FX WSD range, although I think it was the 7.1 she saw in the shop.

The other bike we are interested in is the Specialized Vita...have you looked at that?

I hadn't, but it looks pretty good and cheaper. I've also had a look at a Ridgeback Element this evening, but think I'm just going to bite the bullet with the Trek, unless I'm not happy when I test ride it.
