Chitty has been in the doctors all last week, undergoing a major transplant procedure (new rear cassette, ringset, chain, shifters and cables)

First "proper" ride in today and I am amazed at how well she shifts gear...and how accurately.

I have gotten used to wrenching the shifter to literally "pull" the cable into a gear, getting stiffer as we go up through the gears and never normally getting the gear I actually desire.

but now, a flick, a click, and she just "clicks" into gear....no strain, no pressure on the wrist!!!

I actually used ALL the gears on the top ring today as apposed to the main three (low-mid-high) and was clicking up and down at every opportunity as apposed to only when I really "had to".

its like I've got a new set of legs.

well worth the money, I wonder how long it will take before I get used to the new shift system .....and Chittys shift in personality.

I've been avoiding taking the commuter apart for a full service....he probably needs it as I could tell yesterday that he wasn't happy but two things are putting me off:
1. replacing parts ie cables....hmm money that I might not have and they're not massively causing grief at the moment - brake blocks etc are ok.
2. Taking it all apart or partly apart is a big task and I sort of need the bike this week

I'll get round to it, not usually this lax! My bike is jealous Jonny!

I get the 'new legs' feeling every Monday - after the weekend rest and Sunday's full clean & lube.

By Wednesday the legs start to tire and the drivetrain starts to get dirty and squeaky. I do a mid-week chain clean (mickle method) and lube again to get me through Thurs & Fri.

I ride 120 miles a week so the twice weekly lube is necessary.

But I share BentMikey disdain to for squeaky chains.

Went for the "lowest end" shifters but a fairly good cassette (all better than the original's) and the total bill was £129.00, which I thought was good

Although I could probably pick up a newer second hand bike, for only a little more...it wouldnt be chitty...plus she deserves some TLC after the treatment I've been giving her of recent.

me too, I ride around 120, (sometimes a little more) a week but tended to lube her only once in a while.

I've learnt that lesson now, so will be using my sunday mornings to give her a good wash and brush up each week.

I had to tweak the gear cables at the weekend.

Rear mech was a bit 'clickety' and downchanges were 'rubbery'.
Chain brushed the front mech when on middle and penultimate sprocket.

1/2 turn of front adjuster and 3/4 turn of rear adjusted. Job done.

lots and lots of new riders out this week riding old bikes with chains that would appear to have never been oiled

I've heard a couple of very noisy bikes this week on the commute, don't know how people can stand to ride them like that,it would drive me mad.
Wonder how long the Sunday cleaning routine will last johnny:biggrin:

£129 notes (with shifters) and labour isn't bad at all. B)
