But if everyone leaves their locks on the stands then is that like putting your beach towel on a sun lounger??

This is also a problem at my place and it really really pisses me off.

I hate people who ride banged up bikes obviously dont care one bit about their rides wacking them in right next to my bike.

Ive come out and found a my front disk scrapping, wheel bent round, and someone using my saddle as a hanger for their coat.

The coat got slung half way across the carpark which I then run over on my way out leaving a nice black tire mark on it

A group of us like minded cyclists now occupy some spaces further away from the bangers as we call them.

There are about 5 or 6 spaces in the rack. I will do a further investigation on Monday but it is good to know I am not going to be breaking some unwritten rule of bike racks by taking a space with a lock on it (if I can). This will be the first time I am sharing a rack/locking space with more than one other person (who I work with). (unfortunately I am going to have to drive in on Monday the main reason being is that I did not find the box in which I packed my "work clothes and washing stuff" in before I gave up unpacking on friday afternoon)

I dont agree, if they want to simply leave the lock, then they would lock it around something else (stairs etc...) leaving it on the stand is a clear attempt to get "germanic" and claim the space.

ignore it...first come first serve

...but have you ever seen a cyclist on a forum suggest that they are claiming their space with their lock?

I haven't, and it's not the same as you suggesting other people do it.

That really is rather unfortunate. Would it really have been so hard simply to leave a note and place the coat elsewhere?

The main thing I used to dread was if somebody locked my bike as well as theirs to the frame; now that would have been unfortunate.

Exactly what BM says - I used to leave a big chain on a Sheffield at work..just cos it was 10lbs in weight..... folk would lock their bikes to the stand, but I'd use another - just a handy spot...

TBH, got hissed off with our facility due to lock faults on the enclosed stand......., so carry the bike into my office now....saves a fair few minutes locking, ditching lights etc....

I have been thinking of leaving a heavy duty chain and lock on the town center bike slots to save me carrying one. Do you think this a good idea or will some jobsworth come and remove it?

Just to make some of U jealous ,at work my bike sits locked in a portacabin all on its own ,I have some coathooks for work clothes shoes etc but sadly no showers .Only a short commute so doesnt really matter.

Yes believe it or not I had already removed his coat from my colleagues saddle the week before. We all have lockers, 8 excellent shower rooms and a purpose built drying room with some more lockers all especially for cyclists so why he would want to do that is beyond me.

I was pissed off and that was the last straw.

There have been cases of thieves putting super-glue in locks thus leaving the bike owners stranded without adequate locks (also whilst the locks are on the bike so that the bike cannot be unlocked and has to be left) so I wouldn't advise leaving it there.

Is there a way to identify old locks that aren't used.... I think some of the locks in school belong to children who have left school now ... I'm sure they have been there over a year untouched. But how do you establish this?

Really !?, thats shocking.

I remember an article in a london paper a while ago about a local authority loosing its case to remove locks along a stretch of park railing or something which used to be used by cyclists to lock their bikes.

Im not sure they can just come along and cut them off without prior notification.

I leave my motorbike chain lock on the racks at work so I don't need to lug it around. We have about 10 racks which are under cover and another 20 or so in the elements. What pisses me off most is people using the covered racks for long term bike storage, take your bike home if you're too nesh to ride in winter.
