I'm looking for a new road bike to replace my old Dawes giro 300, budget is about a grand and I'm bewildered by the current choice in road bikes, so does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not a racer but would like to do a few sportives next year, what's the best value/spec bike for me? Thanks :-)

That's a big question

What makes are sold by your latest stores, are you buying cash or C2W? Do you want to be able to fit mudguards and a pannier rack for commuting / touring?

How tall are you?

For a grand, you are probably looking at alu, carbon forks and Shimano 105 or SRAM. You could also find entry-level carbon in budget but depends what floats your boat

Do you have any sort of shortlist - even what colour you might like!

Hi, don't need mudguards or panniers as it will be purely a pleasure bike and I have my Dawes and a gt zaskar mtb for commuting or carrying panniers, I'm about five eight and eleven stone and as for colour, I'd really like red! I like the look of specialized, felt and cube bikes ( my dream bike would be a Merckx )

Specialized, you'll get the best frame, but less good components for the pennies.

Felt, are good vfm, I think the Z6 has won lots of accolades - carbon but Tiagra rather than 105 .

F75, alu and 105, but a more racy geometry

Cube, good vfm too - here with 105 http://www.cyclesurgery.com/cube-bi...s/bikes-components-bikewear/fcp-product/46862

Cannondale worth a butchers too - meant to have best alu frame - there is the racy CAAD and the more relaxed Synapse

CAAD 8 http://www.pedalon.co.uk/acatalog/cannondale_caad8_105.html

Also Giant, the Defy 1 is a super bike - funny colour this year (I like it myself but perhaps understated) http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/defy/11833/56801/

Struggling with the red thing! The Specialized has some but Tiagra https://www.cyclesurgery.com/pws/UniqueProductKey.ice?ProductID=CSBC1366WR

Perhaps have a play with the Ribble bike builder - Sportive with 105 is around a grand http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/bbd/r...part=BB12RIBSPORTIVE7046&sub=conf_BBRA&bike=1
