Best ride ever tonight, despite the drizzle and darkness.

Thought I would try a new route and its great, quiet country lanes with virtually no traffic, lovely countryside and a nice little bit of off road with no cars at all, even drops me near the shops. Adds a mile or so on taking it to nine miles but I felt I could have done double tonight.

Its weird, the speed thing, I was on fire tonight, 17/18 mph all the way home, even had to ease up a bit and I never do that but I was going too quick a couple of times, I overtook another cyclist, I flew past like he was stood still which I usually only do to grannies on Raleigh twenties ;)

Its funny how car drivers look at you with generally a mixture of contempt, pity, sympathy, hatred, resentment but it should be envy !

My summer job boss has moved office...means I can do 15 miles along mainly country lanes, rather than a busy A road. ;). When I get home I'll test the route properly.!

i found when i change my route no matter how little i seem to think im going faster maybe the old adage "a change is as good as a rest " comes into play. Another thing i find interesting is that car drivers at my place of work moan about the amount of traffic but they never seem to think about changing there route. maybe a good thing means cyclists can find the empty roads

Terry, it was based on my speedo !

I posted this as there seems to be a lot of threads about problems with drivers, falling off and the less pleasant side of cycling, there is the odd one about helpful drivers but I get the impression that anyone considering starting commuting could be put off by half and hour on here looking at some of the threads.

Also, it was a good day yesterday, went out again (to the chippy) and a ped remarked on how good my lights were.

Tailwind?

It's amazing how much difference just having even a very light wind behind you will make.

But indeed  on finding a fun route to ride. There's nothing better than enjoying the commute setting you up for a good day, rather than starting off on the wrong foot.

What does make car drivers envious is the amount cyclists can eat without putting on any weight.
Whenever there is food in the office I make a point of stuffing my face to the maximum , and all the lardarse motorists look on in envy while guiltily nibbling the odd morsel.

A good route is worth its weight in gold. My route is not the most direct - far from it - but the direct route would be nasty: nearly all not-quite-wide-enough-for-it-but-the-cars-will-still-do-60plus-anyway-even-though-it's-a-40-limit-C-road type stuff so I'd be sure to get some joyous overtakes ( ), then through a bit of village which is ALWAYS gridlocked in the kind of way where I would struggle to filter safely. And, of course, there's the anger that kind of gridlock induces in all the cagers to contend with.

As it is, I get to go through woods, across fields and the only traffic I see is on a couple of housing estates. In a couple of months, there'll be bluebells in the woods and it's all lovely ... the 2-3 extra miles are a bit of a delight.

Maybe was a tailwind, its funny some days there seems to be no wind but the air seems heavy, other days you breeze through ?

Will do the same route home, after the dissapointment of the route that goes up the side of the Manchester Airport Runway being a quagmire it was nice to find one suitable with only limited exposure to Cheshire Kamikaze premium SUV operators.
