I have just got some of these http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish.../shoes/road/product.-code-SH-RT80.-type-.html they should be great for the commute when it gets a bit warmer they are very much like road shoes but are SPD

Ive got an entry level pair like that I wear on my winter club bike (I can't remember the model); there not quite as walkable as another mtb due to the stiffness of the sole but I've found them to be a good compromise, especially at cafe stops.
