Thought I'd say hello here before I start bombarding the forum with all the normal newbie questions.

I have just started cycling at the age of 50, having done no exercise for the last 17 years so can be seen huffing and puffing around the roads of Wirral

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
My poor bum and legs are feeling better. I intend to get onto the road next week for my first real ride. For the last few days I have been using my bike as an indoor trainer, its time to get out there.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

It's been 5½ weeks since getting the bike and I've covered 287 miles going out 3 evenings a week with a longer ride in the weekends.
Average speed is up from 11.5 to 14.9 mph but don't seem to be able to get further than 21 miles on a ride. Maybe this Sunday, when I make my first journey to the famous "Eureka" cafe.

Welcome Ian. I did exactly the same 2 years ago and have changed from a 16.5 stone lardass who couldn't bike 10 miles to a 15.5 stone rotund person who did his first 100 miler this year. Surprised my family too by biking to our family holiday.
The biggest thing I'd say is do something every day, even if it's only 5 miles. Your fitness will build quickly.
