Hi I'm Rob.. the forum name would have given that away I guess...

I'm looking to convert from a car to a bicycle for my daily commute. My commute is 3.8 miles each way from the city centre into suburbia, so all busy arterial routes but plenty of cycle paths both on the roads and on pavements.

My budget it around £300 pounds for the bike, I really have no idea what I'm looking for I've always ridden mountain bikes in the past but am open to suggestion.

I'm looking for as much advice as possible regarding all aspects of commuting to work in the city

Many thanks in advance

Rob

Riding in traffic you will probably feel safer and more comfortable on a bike with flat handlebars.

The Carrera Subway is well thought of on here, despite being from Halfords.

The linked one is showing at £199, although prices vary from day to day.

Your local bike shop will have similar style bikes.

Giant Escape 3
Carrera Subway (as mentioned above.)
VooDoo Masara (on sale at the mo at a tiny bit above your budget but definitely worth considering)

or if you don't want a flat bar:

B'twin Triban 3
Carrera Tdf

Alternatively if you still have a mountain bike you like you could always use that and change the tyres to slicks / semi slicks if you want. Given the distance you want to travel everyday and the type of riding you are doing it doesn't matter much.
