Last year I moved from a Hybrid to a road bike. Its a Scott s30. Somethings I learnt from this experience, as a larger guy. I had a number of problems with the rear wheel, and spokes. Us biggies need more spokes, shouted most of the forums (fora) and some of my friends. I changed the rear wheel to increase to 32 the number of spokes through a Mavic wheel on a Hope hub. The wheel is perfect, is a much smoother ride and I no longer get the frequent adjustments to my gears and spokes. I could not believe a wheel would make that much difference. But it does. As I am in Yorkshire I felt buying local (Hope) was a good idea. However, again a lesson in not reading forums (fora) beforehand, Hope are the noisiest hubs apparently, albeit superb hubs. When freewheeling it sounds like I have a card and peg on the wheel. At first it annoyed me but now it acts as an instant alert for pedestrians and is less alarming than a bell. It all works so no complaints from me. The team at Arragons in Penrith did an excellent job. http://arragons.com/
I have done some great rides since with no problems. So if your a big guy, get more spokes.
It also comes with a Compact set 34/50 and 30/12 on the rear. I have been worried that it might not get me up my annual health check ride to Ventoux but the ratio seems to work on 16 and 17 degree hills (Fleet Moss, Great Dun Fell, Hartside, Kirkstone et al) so hopefully it will get me up the Windy Mountain 3 way in August.
