A small adrenalin moment this morning:

Riding down Bootham, to my left is a cobbled parking layby, ahead are a set of ped crossing lights, followed shortly after by a side road on the left. Approaching the lights, the car ahead of me is indicating left, and the lights change to red. So it pulls up, and I pull up, behind, in a vaguely secondary position. Just as the lights change to flashing amber, a lady cycles past me on the left, using the cobbled parking pull-in area to pass me - which was a bit startling, but never mind.

As we all set off again (she in fact never had to actually stop), she is now beside the car indicating left. Reaching the turning ( a few yards away), she spots the left indicator, and jams the brakes on, expecting the car to left hook her - I think in fact the driver was waiting for her. No harm done, apart from the fact that I've glanced down at my gear shift indicator, and looked back up to find her stationary in front of me, as I accelerate! My reflex 'woah!' shout was probably disproportionate to the likelihood of a collision, since I braked immediately, but it got her moving again.

I would have caught her to apologise for the yell, and suggest that undertaking me had been a poor move, but I didn't catch her before she turned off...

Fault on her side: Undertaking me, and either not noticing the left indicator flashing or putting herself in a position to be left hooked.

Fault on my side: being momentarily distracted from the road ahead as I set off.

Fault on the driver's side: none at all that I could see. Hoorah!

Apart from that, an uneventful ride in - the new ominous ticking noise I couldn't place a mile further on turned out to be coming from the engine of the car behind waiting to pass... ;)
