Bought some Shimano R501's 3.5kmiles ago, used in all weathers, really impressed, taken some abuse but stayed perfectly true and never needed truing.

Was reading about someone whos rim had exploded so thought I'd have a look as I'm sure I had a wear indicator hole near the valve on mine - but can see nothing..

Hmmm..

I guess 3.5k miles in all weather use isn't that bad? is it????

Shimano wheels are excellent. I have had several sets and they have always impressed.

Agreed...

I'm probably not shocked about not seeing the wear indicator as they have been all weather wheels but they LOOK brand new still - seems a shame to replace...

Are you sure there is/was a wear indicator? If there was one, I'd expect to see some kind of sign of where it had been - they don't just simply disappear. 3.5 k miles is not a lot in the life of a rim unless you do a lot of heavy braking in bad conditions. Your lbs should be able to check the rim thickness with a gauge if there is any doubt and the rim should be showing visible signs of wear if it is really wearing out.

I'm sure I remember a tiny hole by the valve that I can't find now - I googled the wheel and found the 501 does have a wear indicator....

Lawrence I have the 501s and i'm sure they have a wear indicator. A small hole. Let me go have a look for you and if I can i'll get a pic of it.

I had the RS10's which are a similar wheel and the front one lasted over 7000 miles before the rim was visibly concave, read a post from Fossy about his rim exploding on the commute so changed mine PDQ

Lawrence, the wear indicator is on the opposite side from the valve.
This is the front wheel after maybe a couple of thousand miles.

Thanks Tomba, just gave the wheels a bit of a clean and found it...

Slightly concave each side of the indicator but looks OK....

That's saved me a few quid this month then!
