New Year's Resolutions

Has anyone made one? Or are they a pointless exercise?

I've made them light-heartedly in the past - never with anything life-changing at stake - with varying results. This year, I thought avoiding swearing might be a good one to try. So far I've slipped up twice at a total cost of £1.

No resolutions. Except to get out on the bike more in winter which I made in 2010. The weather has screwed that up rather a lot so far although I did a very enjoyable ride into the Wolds yesterday. Still plenty of snow and ice on the small roads.

In my opinion they are pointless. If you want to change your life, eat healthier, quit smoking/drinking then just do it rather than waiting for the excuse of a new years resolution.

I made one to give up drinking for a while. I wasn't a big drinker maybe a bottle of wine or 2 a week with the wife and every now and again let my hair down on a night out/in. I have not made the resolution to totally cut it out just to not have the pointless weekend drinks just because its the weekend.

I made a (slightly belated) resolution in response to a completely stupid feature in yesterday's Observer (online - so far haven't spotted it in the hardcopy) which included a warning (from a medical professional, apparently) that too much exercise is bad for you. And you may well ask, how much were they suggesting was bad for you? e.g. were they talking about professional triathletes training for 10 hours a day at their three disciplines? And what was the advice based on?

The answers:
Too much exercise is more than about 2 hours per week - they recommended a maximum of 30 minutes, 3 or 4 times a week. (This should stop those pesky cycle commuters, eh)

A study looking at stress response systems or some such (I don't recall such badly written trash) in athletes who trained to exhaustion on a daily basis

My resolution:
To disregard medical advice and exercise at least three times more than the advised limits every week

That's how I see it.

However, my decision to lose some weight and reduce my waistline has conincided with new year so it is a good mile stone to check a year's progress.
