But what results! The recent half-season/product-test/advert of Jet Lag The Game was filmed in New York this year and the Manhattan streets looked so much nicer than when I last visited, without the jams and with so many more people on them.

As you say, it's only the truly evidence-denying who can oppose congestion charging in general now, surely?
Hey, a fellow Jet Lag fan!

I was in New York at the start of the month and did quite a bit of cycling, but admittedly most of it was either on closed roads (Five Boro Bike Tour) or in Central Park or on the Hudson Valley Greenway, so I didn't really encounter much traffic. The only time I rode on-road for any great length of time was in getting to the start of the FBBT, which I did by doing the length of the 7th Avenue cyclelane, but that was at about 6am, so it's probably not a good comparison for anything!

Something along the lines of 60% of New York city residents (not Staten Island or Long Island) don't own a car. In a country with 2 registered cars per person that's something, which is why any opposition to congestion pricing would come from outside the city. It seems they've made progress improving the place by trying to limit car use. Of course people do drive in, because public transit only serves a smallish central area and is spotty west of Newark for example. Also there are grey fields in NYC and New Jersey where no one lives officially and one has to bypass them to get anywhere.

Not at all a reasonable assumption about riding in New York! Organised rides usually have the roads closed off!
