Hi there ,I've recently taken up the CTW scheme , I haven't been in the saddle for a fair few yrs but age was creeping up on me so was my coastline AKA (waistline) . So I purchased a carrera kraken ,I've been cycling to work now for a month and can honestly say I enjoy it . I'm not to impressed with the gears tbh but a good pal of mine has a Shimano full set of gears going ( the name hollow tech xt springs to mind) so I intend to change them pretty soon . He also has some rock shock forks going , what do you guys think about the change will it be worth it or am I to inexperienced ATM and talking nonsense lol thanks ray

Hi Razer and :welcome:.

What problem are you having with the gears? The Carrera Kraken has quite a decent drivetrain so I'd check the set up is right before you go replacing anything.

Likewise with the fork - this review rates it pretty well.

Thanks phil , the problem I have with the gears is as mentioned in the bike radar write up ,they seem clunky and some times miss . I will get them checked though, as with the forks I read an artical about suntour forks saying they tend to leak and the rockshok are a better buy plus They have remote lockout so it just seemed all round better , but as I said I'm new and still learning. Thanks ray

Hi Razer, and welcome to Cyclechat.

If you are mainly cycling to work or road riding then you may find that you will move away from MTB's sometime soon. I rode an MTB to work and back for years and loved it (for the most part!) but I eventually gave in and changed bikes.

I can honestly say this opened up a totally new world of riding for me.

So perhaps have the gears looked at but maybe reserve judgement on upgrading drive systems until you settle into riding to work and can start to get a really good understanding of what will work for you. You may be looking at a totally different solution.

PS, clunky gears is most likely just an adjustment of the Barrell screw/screw at the back of the rear mech, to re-align your indexing, which is most likely out due to cable stretch. Make small adjustments until the clackity noise goes away.
