Hi,
I think I posted this to the wrong place to begin with - I am new to this site and came across it when I was looking at classified. I'm mainly a runner but have entered my first triathlon this year at the age of 50 so need to pick up on the cycling. I haven't got loads of expensive gear though - plan to do the triathlon on my 2010 Specialized Secteur roadbike. May push to get some better wheels but only once I've got my fitness to where I want it to be.

Welcome,
Sounds like a good plan.
I wish you every success in your endeavours.

Welcome Leightonr, from Abingdon!
And congrats to doing more cycling, in my experience, cyclists are mildly obsessive, runners are hugely obsessive and Triatheletes are completely loopy insane obsessive ;)
Whereabouts are you? There are some good sporting clubs around both cycling and Triathlon ...if bikes, beer and the more social side of cycling is more your thing ... there's always Abingdon Freewheeling!
Cheers

Thanks. I am near Wantage - not far from Abingdon. I'd be interested in any information on local Road cycling clubs because I don't have the will power to do long cycles on my own

Well .... you've got ....

The utterly Fab Wantage CTC on your doorstep, more 'touring style' than speed, but a great bunch with all kinds of rides (I see many freewheelers and Didcot Phoenix riders in those pictures!) Joining the CTC is a good thing for the insurance and general fabness of a good strong local group.

Didcot Phoenix, more sporting, Time Trials, etc (I'm also a member here).

There's Abingdon and Vale Tri club, don't know much about them, but they seem pretty active

Then there's us Freewheelers .... we're doing some longer faster rides and a few members are starting to get a bit racy .... Our primary aim however is to get people on their bikes and out cycling

Oxford itself has myriad groups including the famous Zappis!

There's a Newbury club as well, again, more sporting.

Most clubs have a Sunday club run and often other event/training rides midweek.

Just thought I would say hi as I am also in Oxfordshire (Didcot) and not seen anyone else on here from the area yet. Although they are clearly out there :hello:

Oh and wow, just looking at all the links fab foodie has provided. I might have to join a club.

Hello, don't worry about not having expensive gear, just as long as your bike works and you are happy with it, that's all that really matters!

Welcome!

You should join a club, it's the way to meet local cyclists and find good routes and cake-stops!
We (Abingdon Freewheeling) are amongst the more 'social' clubs.

Thanks for the info Fab Foodie. Please can you reassure me that not all Oxfordshire cyclists are miserable? Over the past few weeks I have spotted many cyclists going the opposite way on my commute and whilst I always give a nod and a smile or a wave, all i seem to get back is stares..... maybe I am doing something wrong! :hello: Yesterday I even said good afternoon to someone who was overtaking me and was met with silence although there is the possibility they didn't hear me.
