I am looking to join a local cycle club and my trusty old mountain bike just won't cut it in the world of road cycling. I visited Halfords yesterday and yes the guys were very helpful but I still walked away rather confused. I don't want to spend silly money on my first bike should road cycling not be for me. I was recommended the Carrera Virtuoso which is coming in at £379. Any help/advice would be very welcome. Thanks.

The Carrera bikes are pretty good bikes to start out on and you get good value for money with them. However I think some people will agree that when it comes to getting bikes from Halfords they can be a bit hit or miss with the assembly, and from my experience their advice isn't all that either, but that could just be my local store! If you know anyone who has a road bike maybe you could have a go on theirs to see how you feel?

I'd strongly recommend visiting Freewheel on Goosegate in Hockley - they will offer good advice. (Not saying there's anything wrong with the Carrera, but always useful to look at a few other options).

I might have a second hand Giant Avail 2 in a medium (probably suitable if 5'7-5'11) for sale but I am far from Nottingham, and it'd be over the cost of the TDF (as it was £700 a year ago)

I have an ad in the classifieds but as a newbie you may not be able to see the area yet

Hi Vickster, I am only 5ft 6" so that won't be suitable but thanks anyway.
