Ok

I have just started commuting to work. It is a 25 miles round trip. I do this 5 days a week. I am on day 8. So far so good, only thing is that my bike is making like a grinding noise and my crank/pedal keeps loosening. Does it sound like the bottom bracket is knackered? I am not technical so I don't really know!

All advice is appreciated.

Thanks all

Congratulations and respect to you on your commute!

I don't know about the technical bit. I started to get a few noises around the bottom bracket (pfnaar!) about 1500 miles ago, and assumed it would die.

It's still going quite happily, and I just squirt oil at it occasionally.

Yeah that is what I did when I first heard the noise. Now I'm on the next stage where the crank is coming loose!

Great start Rafreg,

Check the grinding out sooner rather than later - if it's a cartridge type BB, you can get a fully sealed one easily fitted for not many pennies at all; another thing to consider, if your backround is what I think it might be - you don't have to knock the crap out of everything you attempt - you may be stomping on the pedals rather than turning them - that'll knacker your mechanicals too! Try to keep the pedalling smooth.

Good luck and keep at it.

An old Penguin.

Good going!

Get the bike into a reliable shop with a mechanic on the shop floor (I.e. your local independent bike shop rather than Halfords or Evans) as soon as you can to get them to look at it. How old is the bike?
