+1.

Living in London you forget what it's like to have no fallback. I just don't do ice, period. It's just too damn dangerous - you keep falling off.

Hope you're not too battered and that things thaw thoon.

Bit of a 'mare for me this morning. Rear wheel puncture 2 miles from the house. Wheel off, tyre off, tube out. Checked tyre - nothing, checked wheel - spoke sticking through rim tape. Stuck a bit of vinyl tape over it, new tube, wheel on, pump up and off we go. 500 yards further on tyre flat again. Spoke is sticking through rim tape, vinyl tape and into tube. Fekk this me thinks so I ride back home on flat tyre. Quick shower then drive(!!) into work. Scunnered!!!!:becool:

Has anyone tried letting some air out of the tyres so that they are nearly flat?

If you are going slowly because of black ice then you should get more grip . Well you do in cars and on motorbikes . You can always shove some air back in later .
If I had to use a bike I think I'd look for a pair of proper winter tyres like about 28mm at least with some tread.

Glad I have the option of the car. I couldn't risk having an off and being off work because I'm self employed . I only get paid when I turn up!:becool:

I fell off twice on Saturday due to ice on the road. I've ordered a pair of studded tyres.

EDIT
Well, I tried to order a pair of studded tyres, no free stock. I've now ordered a Continental Top Contact Winter which I'll try on the front wheel:

"The Top Contact Winter contains sharp granules in the rubber compound, thus aiding grip in wet and snowy conditions."

EDIT2
Top Contact Winter tyre arrived. The packaging says:

"...the tread also has microspikes made of rough, sharp-edged granules. With these microspikes, the tire can bite into even frozen surfaces."

I'd feel a little happier if they'd used the word 'ice' somewhere.
