use a good system. wash it properly with washing powder but no conditioner to get rid of the pongs . then use nikwax TX direct wash in waterproofer . Then the Nikwax Tech wash can be used quite regularly to keep it pong free and water repellant. ideal for breathable fabrics like night vision stuff.

When you use it, don't forget to make sure that all the tea-towels are out of the washing machine before switching it on (we are still giggling about that)

Do NOT wash it with washing powder. Use a non detergent wash like Nikwax Tech Wash to get it clean then use Nikwax direct wash in. If you use a detergent based wash the pores in the membrane get clogged and it quickly gets water logged in the wet. Have a look on the Nikwax website for the science bit about how membranes work and the efect detergents have on them.

Don't use washing powder. Use soap flakes, followed by a good rinse.

if it has never been washed from new then tech wash won't cut it . I have tried it and several washes with techwash didn't get it clean. you need to get it clean before you waterproof. washingpowder no conditioner then a water only wash, gets it proper clean and ready for waterproofing again.

I used Thompson's water seal on my Sprayway Goretex jacket because I reckoned the jacket was so old it didn't owe me anything. It was a bit stiff for a few wearings but now the damned jacket is as good and as waterproof as it was when I bought it about 18 years ago.
