Nintendo Wii, do we own a 2012 Betamax?

We bought a Wii a few years back as we liked the concept of the wavy-armed gameplay, and this was before anyone else had thought of the idea. Others have now jumped on the bandwagon and seem to be more popular/producing more games more regularly.
I will admit, I don't keep abrest of new or even old releases so this is going on impressions gained from volume of TV ads and number of games available in hight street stores, but the other consoles (Xbox, Playstation etc) appear better supported. Would we be better getting rid and buying a rivals product d'you think?
Oh, kids are 12 and nearly 10.

I played on the Wii U over the weekend at a friend's for an hour.

New consoles can have very few games at launch and games reach their potential from a programming point of view when things mature a few generations of games in.

My short impressions of the console was that I'm not convinced of the interplay between the screen on the controller and what goes on the screen. Also although the resolution was a lot better, the colour palette had lots of washed out hues. The colour reproduction was quite subdued, instead of deep, inky blacks and blow your socks off colour it was quite pastel like and subdued. I do share people's concerns that if the block of plastic isn't heating up like a radioactive core and scaring your neighbours with its power needs that it might be underpowered.

I did like Sonic & All Stars racing transformed. It was a bit harder than a lot of kart racing style games Nintendo has done in the past and had an amusing mix of levels. I was going to play on another game, but them the console went on a massive binge update and I got bored and went home.

The thing I did find very disturbing was the 5Gb firmware update. Not the brightest idea Nintendo have ever had.

I wouldn't buy a xbox or ps3 now, common census is that the new generations of both will be out in the next 12/18 months.

Console gaming doesn't seem to have the hype it used to, which I guess relates to having consoles which were launched 6 years ago.

Ive always been more of a PC gamer, though I loved the Dreamcast

I still use my Sega Megadrive. Classic gaming at it's best.

Stick with the Wii for now - fun bit of kit, and it wasn't aimed at the heavy weight gaming machines like Xbox/PS3. We've got the Kinect version, and I can't say the choice of games is that huge for Kinect - can't compete with the Wii for that, but it's a hardcore gaming machine/multi media hub. My son uses it for racing games and shooters mainly, and we use it for the video media/sky abilities.

Depends how much you pay. I just got a PS3 super slim from Tesco's for £125 (there was some online offer). It only has 12GB of memory but that is not an issue to me. I am really enjoying playing Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare 1. It is finally just about hacker free and way better than the COD games after it (just IMHO). I could never see me paying £300 or more for a console anymore, no matter how powerful it is.

I finally got a PS1 when the PS2 came out. Games were as cheap as chips, as were the cosoles. Then when the PS3 came out, I was given a PS2... which spends most of its time playing Worms Armageddon, a game which is yet to be beaten in my book.

People keep telling me to buy an X-box or PS3, but I cant see the point... I'm happy being retro
