Off today but left a layer at work Friday so Monday morning was cold. It was really cold too at 3.40pm, Once that sun goes down the temperature plummets

Quite a nice day today, was a tropical 2c at lunchtime and 0c coming home at 10pm.
Side and minor roads still worry me too much to get the bike out just yet, still looks like Thurs/Fri before I attempt it.

Bah I was all ready to man up and cycle in at a predicted -7 this morning, then it turned out to only be -1. I feel let down.

-14ºc this morning, my buff froze where it was pulled over my mouth/nose!

Still grippy out there, the slush isn't frozen yet but my 4 mile commute is taking me 20-25mins rather than under 14mins in the summer!

:eek::eek:

It probably does come across like I am competing here, but today was the coldest I have ever experienced. When I went out to the car it was very frozen on the inside and out. My hands, despite wearing gloves were cold very quickly.

When I turned the engine on the car indicated it was -17C (one of my neighbours said his car was registering -18C!

Then once defrosted and we set off, the gauge dropped to -18C....then to -19C!!!!

Blimey that was cold!! To compensate though it looked amazing with thick frost on all of the trees! Still, I am looking forward to it defrosting, so I can get back on the bike!

It doesn't count if you measured the temperature from the comfort of a warm car

I walked in today and passed the frozen Clyde

I'm further north than you are... and I cycled. No competition!

Aye, but there was no way I'd cycle on 25mm tyres considering the state of the roads. In saying that I did see a cyclist on what looked like 23s or 25s cycling down the main street of Torrance.

If that was anyone on here, much respect....oh and you're a nutter!:biggrin:

You really need a bad-weather bike, you know.

I rode round the forth in conditions like this last year on 23mm tyres, it was actually ok in terms of grip but looking back I think a tad stupid!

I was riding during last winter as well, and the temps hit -15C. This winter seems to be different though because of the amount of snow and ice on the roads. Last winter there was a heavy dump of snow followed by lots of dry cold weather, so the roads were cleared pretty quick. There just doesn't seem to have been a long enough gap this year to get the roads clear.

Aye, but you are right, I could do with a bad weather bike. If and when I have time I will look out the old Ridgeback. It's a bit of a tank though!

I didn't know you still had that thing! It's definitely different this year, certainly colder. I've stuck CX tyres on my MTB and it's been working a treat - it means plenty of grip plus I can keep full mudguards on it so that when it's slushy it doesn't go up my back. They're good in 6-8" of snow - deeper than that and it's really hard work, they don't like semi-compacted snow as they dig in too much. Great for getting from the back roads near my house to the main roads though.

I don't think cold is the limiting factor it's the uneven/ frozen state of the roads.

Most of the main routes are clear now but the side streets are impossible. the worst is where a small section has been cleared. Fine for a few yards and then you have 3inch jump back onto the compacted snow.

Enjoy the deep and crisp and even while you have it!
