I disagree about stabilisers being evil
Yes I remember them being more of a hinderance, they just slowed me down, particularly when cycling in the muddy back lane.
I hated them so much that I had no real desire to ride a bike. Then, aged about 8, I finally managed to ride on 2 wheels and all of a sudden, it was like lifting a fog from my eyes. I didn't want to stop!
I suppose I'd probably be cycling a trike of some type now if I had never mastered it.
Still brings a tear to my eye seeing a tot pedaling on their own,
