A classic case of target fixation, looking at what you want to avoid instead of where you want to go. 95% of steering is done with the eyes.

We've all been there.

^ and since the back brake has the effect of standing the bike up, it was never going to lean in (which in fairness he did try to do before freezing like a rabbit in headlights)

To me there was a potential cresting/surface fall away problem on that corner. That made it a very low hit for target fixation. A much more problematic corner for me was the second in the video, I was waiting for the wall to stop blocking the view for a long time.

Was the first utterance a "D'OH!" as in Bart Simpson?

Braking and cornering just don't mix.

What... why.... how....
eye/motor memory coordination. Basically if you look at what you don't want to hit then 9 times out of 10 you'll hit it. If you look away from it then 9 times out of 10 you'll go around it. He concentrated on/ started looked at the wall because he wanted to avoid it & from that moment on was always going to end up with a crunch.
