Noisy pedals

I have a strange sort of grinding noise coming from my pedals I think. I have a set of cheap shimano pedals on my bike. There is a spring inside of these, does this need oiled or cleaned out regularly?

grinding sounds could mean a collapsed bearing

or

you did fit a washer on your crank didn't you?

could be a bearing in the pedal
