So... Evans swapped out the back wheel after telling a porky to Specialized (they told Spesh that the bike was only 3 weeks old - it's actually almost 6 months old!). They fitted a replacement wheel via warranty - same Alex Z1000 that was 2 weeks ago.

Guess what happened on Yesterday morning's pootle, swerving round broken glass - *ping* another spoke and an instant banana wheel

Luckily I was within walking distance to my mate's place so he took me back to Clapham and I went into an LBS. I explained the situation and the guy was v helpful. I got a stronger rear wheel, fitted and done within 20 mins (as they knew I was in a rush). Excellent service from Apex Cycles! My first visit to them and I was impressed with the friendliness and good service. It's a Mavic rim with double sidewall and a Shimano Deore hub. should have been £85 but the guy let me have it for the old price (£65) as they had only very recently changed the pricing. Plus a tenner for fitting.

Let's see how long this "stronger" wheel lasts me then

You know it DJtG
Funny you should mention it because I am looking at one second hand Today perhaps. Same Decathlon road bike I was thinking of (just gone back up to 300 in store). Someone local is selling one 6 months old for 130. So all being well I'll be a road bike owner later Today

Me too

Seems I got "mugged" at the LBS for the wheel... investigations have led me to believe I would have saved about a tenner overall from Evans:

Oh well, nevermind. I doubt Evans would have turned it around in 20 mins with such nice service!

Edit: same wheel is almost twice the price at some places though: http://www.bonthronebikes.co.uk/65-413269

Seems strange they can be selling the same kit at such a hugely different cost than a competitor!

Many machine built wheels aren't 'built' with enough tension. Certainly a cheap set I got for my MTB has snapped 5 spokes in 6 months - 3 drive side, 2 non-drive. They've settled down now I've re-tensioned them.

Helps if you have an old wheel - 5 spokes taken from that...never throw stuff away 'eh...
