I've tried the suggestions above but still not working for me

You need to leave it for a while after logging out before coming back.

Or you could just go to new posts and add a "watched" filter and an "unread" filter.. Voilà - watched threads with new posts. Once you've added it the software remembers and next time you go back to new posts it'll still show watched threads with new posts
