Nutters!!!!

Ok for years I've been cycling in to central London at around 7am - 7.30am and it hasn't been too bad. However I've now shifted to a new role that requires a later start . Today was my first day in on the bike and what a difference an hour makes!!! It was completely mental!!! Not just the drivers, the cyclists and pedestrians too. I had cyclists coming up my inside as I was leaving room on an overtake of another cyclist. Pedestrians just stepping out as and when they felt like it. I'm surprised anyone makes it to work!!!

I come in from Bexleyheath, so probably go a similar route from Welling.

I tend to hit the busy last 4 miles into London at 8 - 8.30 and it's a mad house atthe moment. The cyclists can be just as bad as the car, vans, buses and taxis.

But this is peak commute season. Wait til October and most of the fair weather cyclists will have gone.

I'd be tempted to go in half an hour early next time and see what happens then. Gives you time for a post-commute relax/coffee/breakfast too

Ah, business as usual I'm afraid.

You might get a little reprieve in a couple of weeks once the schools break up, but it sounds like most of your traffic is other commuters. Rain, dark evenings, or massive job losses in central london will almost certainly calm it.

I may have to employ some of Cavendish's tactics! That should put some people off!!

Got to find out what commuting at 5pm is like yet!!!

I've just been called a nutter for cycling home for lunch, something I do everyday it's only 8-10 minutes, but today it was raining.
Normal work clothes with a waterproof jacket on.

If I had not gone home for lunch I would have missed out on "scalping" a Bianchi roadie type while I was on my heavy hybrid.

Well thankfully most of coming home wasn't too bad. Got sworn at twice but by people behind me who then turned off before I could talk to them. I'm starting to feel very unloved, no one ever wants to talk to me!!

Is it too much to ask that you don't wind your window up and pretend I'm not there? Is it really?


Then it all went badly wrong when some old bloke dropped me on Shooters Hill, not good.

Then as I tried to catch up with him along the flat bit to home a van pulled up alongside me and the passenger asked if I knew I was doing over 30mph

It's quite a difference isn't it? I leave about 6:34 all days bar Thursday (leave approx 7:39) and the sheer number of cyclists on the later run is staggering. It's entertaining though, imho.

I must confess I don't commute by bike very often as I have to go right from very North to South London and I can't stand facing the rush-hour going home. I think there is an invisibilty cloak that comes over me as I cross Oxford Street at 6pm, judging by the number of pedestrians who step out as soon as the last car has crossed in front of them!
