One of the chaps I work with rides an old Dawes roadster. I noticed the other day, his back wheel was a bit out of true.
Today, he arrived with a flat tyre - he'd noticed halfway to work, but it got him there. He set about fixing it this afternoon, and called me over to see... the total crack through the rim. I don't mean just a visible crack, I mean the two edges could be moved relative to each other.
Then he pinched pairs of spokes together. I think about half were actually connected.... He said when he corners, it sort of flexes!
But he'd fixed the puncture, so he put it all back together and rode off home!
He does think he'll need a new wheel. But apparently he found the bike in the first place, next to the road with a note on it saying free to a good home, so he got off the bike he was riding, stuck the note on that, and took the Dawes!
