Octopuses have a relatively short life expectancy, and some species live for as little as six months. Larger species, such as the North Pacific Giant Octopus, may live for up to five years under suitable circumstances. However, reproduction is a cause of death: males can only live for a few months after mating, and females die shortly after their eggs hatch. They neglect to eat during the (roughly) one month period spent taking care of their unhatched eggs, but they don't die of starvation. Endocrine secretions from the two optic glands are the cause of genetically-programmed death (and if these glands are surgically removed, the octopus may live many months beyond reproduction, until she finally starves).

Has one been found in one of the quarry pits then?
Yep it has crawled out and is heading towards Pershore, I was wondering how far it would get before expiring from old age... as they can only move at about 100 metres an day on land, probably would get to around Wadborough then keel over.
I know cyclists like that:biggrin:

I was in Rhodes Greece one year. On the beach very early morning, about 5am (I couldn't sleep) when a Greek chap just walked into the rockpools and picked one up just like that...quite big it was too

He then proceeded to bash it on the rocks for half an hour or so, to tenderised it apparently.. then whent off on his way... pointing at the now mashed Octopi and then his mouth saying 'hmmmmmm'

Becasue of seeing that, I had to try Octopus for dinner that night.. and it was absolutely scrummy yum tum..

Funnily enough I came face to face with a big octopus in the sea off Lindos on Rhodes, its head was about 3' long  I didn't bash it against a rock, I more feared it might do that to me:biggrin:

Funnily enough, a barman (old enough to be my dad) took a liking to my OH in Crete 5 years ago.

As a sign of his 'amour', he proceeded to catch an octopus with his spear gun and present it to her. xx(

I have no idea why she didn't give me the boot for him.
