The guy who did the tour we went on (he was a local lad) said that they went on for miles, had been there for years and years and years and became basically a small town during WWII: if I remember correct, there were 5000 people who more or less lived down there .. one family per small alcove, with a curtain screening them from the tunnels. There was a cinema and all sorts, plus a HUGE list of rules posted by the entrance.jonny jeez said:Allegedly...and I'm switching off mission and into a cave bore here (see what I did there...bore!)...the caves are part of a system that stretches out underneath Joydens wood (which is miles away) and apart from being a war time bunker was also the set for a few 1970 TV sci-fi shows (Dr who etc, blakes 7 etc) as well as pop videos.
It's all going off in Chislehurst.
and yes, they are at the bottom of my road, along with a very nice gastropub, if you ever come again.
There was some filming going on while we where there; can't remember what it was for, but we got to see part of the set. And he showed us where there'd been a few gigs / parties, even weddings, during the 80s and 90s. Quite a place.
